Integrative medicine does not only benefit sick patients. Acupuncture and herbal therapy can be used prophylactically in wellness appointments to balance the body and make our pets as healthy as possible.

Because acupuncture stimulates the immune system, regulates hormonal imbalances, and decreases inflammation, it enhances the body’s natural functions and promotes self-healing. Prophylactic treatment (i.e. acupuncture therapy without a specific disease or complaint in mind) can restore natural balance and equip the body to fight disease. Chronic inflammation leads to a multitude of health problems, from osteoarthritis to cancer. By decreasing inflammation, acupuncture increases the body’s resiliency to these diseases. Stimulating the lymphatic and immune system allows our pets to combat environmental stressors such as infections or allergens.

Your pet’s annual or semi-annual wellness exam can include acupuncture therapy. An integrative wellness appointment includes a traditional western physical as well as an eastern exam. Your pet can receive their normal vaccinations and prophylactic care during an integrative appointment. Acupuncture needles can be placed to help strengthen your pet’s constitution, making them more balanced mentally and physically. Acupuncture can also be used to treat any deficiencies identified during their exam. An acupuncture session as a part of the preanesthetic exam prior to an elective surgery, such as a spay or dental cleaning, can help strengthen your pet’s body and speed the healing process after surgery. Similarly, integrative appointments after a surgical procedure can help decrease post-surgical pain and help your pet get back on their feet.
