Canine Rehabilitation

Helping your dog get back to tail wags, zoomies, and couch snuggles

When your dog is recovering from surgery, injury, or a chronic condition, it’s not just their body that needs healing—it’s their spirit, too. At the Animal Hospital of Shawnee Hills, our Canine Rehabilitation services are designed to help your pup regain strength, mobility, and confidence in a safe, supportive, and fun environment.

Our rehab program is led by Dr. Jake Gerard, a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) with a passion for helping dogs live their best, most mobile lives. Whether your pup is recovering from orthopedic surgery, a senior who needs a little extra help getting around, or somewhere in between, Dr. Jake tailors every plan to your dog’s specific needs (and personality!).

What Can Canine Rehab Help With?

Think of it as physical therapy, but with more fur and tail wags. Canine rehab can help dogs with:

  • Orthopedic surgery recovery (like TPLO or fracture repairs)
  • Neurological conditions
  • Soft tissue injuries (sprains & strains)
  • Arthritis and age-related mobility changes
  • Weight management

What to Expect at Your Dog’s First Rehab Visit

Rehab starts with a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Jake. During this visit, he will:

  • Perform a full nose-to-tail physical exam
  • Recommend diagnostics if needed (like X-rays or lab work)
  • Develop a personalized rehab exercise plan for your dog

Most dogs start with our 6-treatment package, which includes laser therapy at each visit to help reduce pain, speed healing, and improve comfort.

All rehab treatments take place in our newly re-vamped lower level—a peaceful, private environment free from distractions, perfect for keeping your dog focused on their exercises and relaxed during therapy.

Let’s get your pup moving again!

What Our Clients Say About Pet Rehabilitation

Our five-year-old golden retriever, Rosie, has been through more health scares than any dog should have so early in life, the biggest being two torn CCLs. After her second tear and surgery, the care and guidance we received were absolutely incredible. The doctors did an amazing job recommending next steps, and the therapy services at Shawnee Hills truly exceeded our expectations. Dr. Jake and Bree took exceptional care of Rosie throughout her rehabilitation. Their patience, expertise, and genuine love for what they do helped Rosie regain strength, confidence, and mobility—and gave us confidence too. Watching her progress from being timid at vet visits to literally pulling me through their doorway in excitement says everything. I’m so grateful for Dr. Jake, Bree, and the time, dedication, and heart it takes to build and run a rehabilitation clinic like this. Rosie is where she is today because of them, and we couldn’t be more thankful.

We feel so fortunate to have Dr Jake as our vet and Bri as our assistant/therapist. They have been so kind and they really listened to us. Remi has been going to physical therapy for a few weeks and is always ready and excited to see Bri. Bri is very professional and yet at the same time so sweet. She is always updating me about Remi and how she is progressing. She is very honest about what I need to do-cut back on the food and treats so Remi will have the best outcome. I truly believe that Remi is getting stronger and hopefully we can push surgery down the road. Of course we would love not to have the surgery….Dr Jake has always been upfront with outcomes but in such a kind and thoughtful way. I definitely would recommend your PT program to anyone as well as your practice over-all.
