“My pet is young and healthy.   Do they really need an exam?”

It’s a fair question. After all, if your dog is eating, playing, and acting like themselves — or your cat is lounging like royalty, with bouts of the zoomies — everything must be okay… right?

We certainly hope so!!  But it’s not always the case, and that’s exactly why annual exams matter.

What We’re Actually Checking During an Annual Exam

An annual exam is much more than a quick look-over. During your pet’s visit, we’re evaluating things that are easy to miss at home, including:

  • Subtle weight changes
  • Early dental disease
  • Heart and lung sounds
  • Joint comfort and mobility
  • Skin and coat health
  • Lumps, bumps, or changes under the skin
  • Early signs of internal disease with routine wellness bloodwork

Pets are incredibly good at hiding discomfort – especially cats!  By the time something is obvious, it’s often been brewing for a while.

“But My Pet Is Acting Normal…”

Normal behavior doesn’t always mean normal health.

Dogs and cats instinctively hide pain or illness. It’s a survival skill — and it means many medical issues don’t cause noticeable changes until they’ve progressed.

We often catch concerns during routine exams that pet owners had no way of noticing. Finding those issues early can make treatment simpler, less stressful, and more effective.

Why Early Detection Makes a Big Difference

Catching things early can mean:

  • More treatment options
  • Less discomfort for your pet
  • Lower long-term costs
  • Better overall outcomes

A healthy pet isn’t just one who feels okay today — it’s one who’s set up for long-term comfort and quality of life.

Annual exams help us track changes year to year, create a baseline for what’s normal for your pet, and partner with you to make informed decisions as your pet ages.

Every pet is different, and those yearly check-ins help us tailor care specifically to them.

Our Goal Is Partnership, Not Pressure

We know veterinary visits can feel overwhelming sometimes. Our goal isn’t to push unnecessary care, it’s to give you information, guidance, and support so you can make the best decisions for your pet.

Think of annual exams as not just a check-up, but a conversation- a chance to ask questions, share concerns, and make sure your pet is feeling as good on the inside as they look on the outside!

If your pet is due for a check-up, give us a call or text – or schedule online!
